Cataract Overview
A cataract occurs when the lens of the eye begins to cloud, causing vision to blur. Within the eye, the lens allows us to focus light and see objects in detail; if this is not functioning properly, clear vision can be difficult. Cataracts are very common in one or both eyes as you age. Cataracts don’t cause any pain, but they do cause vision to blur at both close and long range. This can make everything from reading to driving difficult.
Cataract Surgery
To correct a cataract, cataract surgery is performed by an ophthalmologist. Cataract surgery is a minor procedure to remove the lens of the affected eye and normally, replace it with an artificial lens. Your eye doctor may use ultrasound energy to remove the cloudy lens or it may be removed with laser technology. This eye surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you do not need to stay in the hospital. Cataract surgery is one of the most common types of eye surgeries and is quite safe.
When To Consider Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is not necessarily needed immediately. After speaking with your opthamologist in person or via TeleHealth, you do have some time to consider your options prior to undergoing cataract surgery. Waiting to have the surgery will not harm your eye. However, at Howerton Eye, we’d like our patients to consider the following questions if they have one or more cataracts:
- Can you safely drive?
- Do you have issues watching television or reading?
- Can you properly do your job?
- Is it difficult to do normal tasks because of your vision?
- Are you more dependent on others because of your vision?
- Do bright lights affect your vision?
If you are not comfortable with one or more of your answers, it may be time for cataract surgery.
TeleHealth for a Cataract Consultation
Due to COVID-19, many patients are questioning if it is the right time to get cataract surgery. With specific precautions like a negative COVID test 3 days before your procedure, Howerton Eye believes it is completely safe to undergo cataract surgery. Additionally, our eye doctors are offering TeleHealth consultations where you can participate in a virtual eye appointment to discuss your eye health with your doctor and decide which the next steps should be taken. This is a great option for patients interested in cataract surgery.
