What is an Intraocular Lens (IOL)?

Following cataract removal, the eye’s natural lens is replaced by an intraocular lens. Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are implanted within the eye. They are also used after a refractive lens exchange, which is a type of vision correction procedure.

IOLs have been available for use since the early 1980s. They are FDA approved. Before IOLs, when cataracts were removed, in order to see clearly you had to wear either special contact lenses or very thick glasses, At that time there was no implantable medical device available that could replace the focusing power of the eye’s natural lens.

Currently, there are a broad range of IOLs available. As a result of technological advancements, you can choose the IOL that is best for your vision and lifestyle needs.

Types of Intraocular Lenses

Monofocal IOLs correct vision at one focus, typically distance. After these lenses are implanted you may still need to wear reading glasses.

These lenses provide clear vision at multiple distances, with an enhanced level of vision at a distinct distance depending on your lifestyle. These lenses may decrease the need for glasses.

These lenses deliver clear, continuous vision from near to far and areas in between. They also may decrease your dependency on eyeglasses.

These IOLs are uniquely designed for patients that have both cataracts and astigmatism.

A premium IOL can correct nearsightedness and farsightedness. Some types of premium intraocular lenses are designed to decrease or eliminate astigmatism. In most cases, after receiving this type of IOL, glasses are not needed.

The Symfony lens is the first extended range of vision IOL to correct presbyopia and improve vision in people with cataracts, as well as improving far, intermediate, and near vision, with the decreased need for glasses or contact lens after cataract surgery.
